No Valentine? Let’s Go Galentine!

No Valentine? Let's Do Galentine!

If romance isn’t on the cards for you this Valentine’s day,

there’s no need to feel like you’re missing out.  Or you feel that Valentine’s day is disparaged as a manufactured holiday foisted upon us by greeting card companies, and there’s often a sense that it’s only for people who are romantically paired, making it feel rooted in exclusion.

All of these set the stage perfectly for Galentine’s Day. It is a day for women to celebrate their friendships with their lady friends. It’s Valentine’s Day with your BFFs.

Whether they’re the one to always make you laugh on those days when you really don’t feel like smiling, or they’re the one who knows how to pick you up when you’re down with a cuppa and a hug, Galentine’s day is a great opportunity to celebrate the amazing women in your life.

What’s Galentine’s Day? Oh, it’s only the best day of the year. Every February 13th, my lady friends and I leave our husbands and our boyfriends at home, and we just come and kick it, breakfast-style. Ladies celebrating ladies. It’s like Lilith Fair, minus the angst. Plus frittatas.

— “Galentine’s Day,” Parks and Recreation, 2010

The word “Galentine”—a blend of Valentine’s Day and gal—was introduced to the world by the chipper and dedicated Leslie Knope, the fictional Deputy Director of the Parks and Recreation Department of the also-fictional city of Pawnee, Indiana, in the NBC comedy Parks and Recreation, which ran from 2009 to 2015.

It embraced the very idea of a holiday for celebrating friendships, referring to one’s best gals – beloved female friends. Gradually over time, this concept extended to celebrating any kind of friendship. Today, Galentine’s Day is an unofficial holiday that falls on 13 February yearly, becoming a popular day for friends to celebrate.

A day to revel in your singleness and enjoy the company of ‘the girls’.

We have put together our favorite Galentine’s Day ideas so that you can spend less time planning and more time celebrating with your besties.

Bottomless brunch

Splash out on a gorgeously girly bottomless brunch to have a catch up with your best girlfriends. Remember to keep your schedule clear for the rest of the day or you might regret that 5th glass of prosecco!

Or, have fun setting a girly brunch at home with waffles and bacon or a fruit bowl, for the heartier ladies maybe a full English to line your stomach for a day’s drinking!  Get each girl to bring a bottle of something and get bubbly!

Afternoon Tea

Lots of hotels or cafes offer afternoon teas, if you and the girls fancy getting all dressed up and filling up on finger sandwiches and scones in an elegant affair then this is for you! Some may offer a drink or two for the sense of occasion.

If you don’t fancy heading out, get yourself a delivery cream tea and invite your girls over for jammies and scones!

Girl’s night in

Did someone say girl’s night?! As much as we love a messy night out with the girls, Galentine’s day this year lands on a school night so why not pamper yourselves at home! Put on your favorite Rom Com, grab a spoon for the tub of ice cream and chill!

To make it extra special, pop on a sheet mask and do each other’s nails. Really take it back to high school sleepover days!

Gift Ideas

Want to get your girls something to say ‘thank you’ for being a great friend? We have some great gift ideas for you to explore.

Give a gift of relaxation. Buying a pampering gift for your bestie is the perfect way to show you care. Encourage them to take time for themselves, and chill! With the craziness of life today, a bit of calm is definitely needed! Gift sets such as assorted face masks; body cream infused with essential oils; or scented candles for use in their private times.

Alternatively, temp besties to break up with their new year’s resolutions and buy them a delicious assortment of sweet treats such as macarons and chocolates!

You can’t go wrong with a tipple. Nothing says ‘I love you bestie’ more than clinking a glass of bubbly together!  There are  fabulous range of alcoholic beverages in store, from Gins to Baby Champs, all depending their preferences.

If alcohol isn’t their thing, introduce them to alcohol free range that are mostly available in supermarkets, or better, whip up some mocktails.

To express appreciation of your valuable relationship with BFFs on this special Galentine’s Day, shower them with jewelry, which is always a woman’s best friend. Spend some time to look for unique or creative jewelry pieces in necklaces; earrings; bracelets or brooches that best suit their personality.
